In 2016, a youtuber called Jamie Sanders did a video titled ‘What Does Having Tourette's Feel Like? | 20 Answers’. His examples were extremely relatable and, judging by the comments, it made it easier for neurotypical people to understand and empathise with those who have TS. So, I thought I’d do the same.
Here are my 10 examples of what Tourette’s feels like;
Tourette’s is like when you get a shiver (you know, when people say ‘its someone stepping on your grave’) but instead of having that for a second, it’s all the time.
It’s like living with a friend that gets drunk a lot but instead of being a different person, that friend is inside your brain and they are never sober
It’s that feeling when your zipper is open, and everybody notices
Tourette’s is being in an awkward conversation and constantly digging yourself a hole, making it bigger and bigger until everybody around thinks you’re rude, even though you can’t stop
It’s when your phone is on 20% and you put it on charge, but just use all the battery-draining apps so it never gains any charge
It’s like blasting music through headphones in public, you start singing and dancing then forget that nobody else can hear the music
Tourette's is like Christmas lights when they're all tangled up, a constantly flashing mess, inside your head but instead of Christmas it's all year round
It's like playing that game, bogies, and you're shouting louder and louder until everybody notices
Tourette's is like being in a first-person shooter but instead of there being a victor, you just respawn when you die and must watch your back over and over for people It's when you're on a never-ending rollercoaster and you start slowing down to go up hill, think it's almost over but then a sudden drop happens, and you start freaking out
